About

Miriam became a writer after getting her undergraduate degrees in biochemistry and environmental studies and avoiding English lit classes like the plague. While she can barely remember how oxidation and reduction work, she maintains that it is handy to be a journalist who isn't scared of scientific mumbo-jumbo.

She is happily settled with her two partners and baby daughter in Albany, New York, where she walked to work all winter for her first three years in town. She now works at home, enjoying a varied mix of editing and writing projects.

Miriam's favorite part of her work is having an excuse to continually immerse herself in new subjects. She gives her more pedantic side its head in her copyediting work and indulges her more creative and performance-oriented sides in her poetry, thereby keeping a rough internal harmony.

Why "mjoy"?

One of Miriam's partners is named Rebecca Hope. Miriam's middle name is Joyce, but when she started dating Rebecca, it was tempting to frequently shorten it to Joy. Rebecca frequently signed things "r hope"; Miriam began using "m joy." Happily, Rebecca doesn't seem to mind being copied, and Miriam is fond of both the association with joyfulness and the connection to her partner.
